Thanked: 0Semi-finished Dovo??
Hi, Everyone
Like everyone here I have decided to say good by to my Mac3. For weeks I have been reading up, watching youtube videos and making sure I start with the best knowledge I can. I have just learnt that even if you buy a brand new razor it may not be shave ready?
I have gone for a Dovo Best Quality razor, I felt the was going to give me a good quality razor but not break the bank and cost too much, I just assumed that all new razors would be shave ready.
Can someone please tell me what I will need to do to get it shave ready and in what order, so the last step would be stropping but what steps do I need to take before that and in what order?
I have ordered a stop with canvas and paste, but didn't realise I might need to hone so soon therefore I didn't order any stones?
Thanks to any advisors..
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave, welcome to SRP!
You're right, new razors of large brands (custom razors are usually good) are not shave ready, probably to save expenses for the makers. The best thing you can do, is send it out to be honed. It will give you a reference for shave readiness and you cannot accidentally hurt the razor.
Look at the Classifieds under Member services, there are many people who offer honing! Then, when you get it back, don't strop it. If your razor does not feel as sharp on the second shave after stropping, you know your stropping is the problem
I also recommend reading the Beginner's Guide in the Library/Wiki, there's a lot to learn! The DOVO is a quality razor, you made a good choice.
Good luck!I want a lather whip

Thanked: 284Hey Dave - You can send the razor to any of the many reputable members in the classifieds under member services. They'll get it shave ready and then you can just keep it up with stropping. This will do you for quite a while under the edge needs refreshing or some other unfortunate incident...
You won't need to hone for a while unless that's something you want to get into and do yourself when it needs it. Everyone's personal preference...I love living in the past...

I wouldn't start learning to hone just yet. I'd save that until you've mastered making lather, stropping and, most importantly, shaving. Until then, it's best to have your razor properly honed by a professional...ie, members services in the classifieds like mentioned above.

Thanked: 0I live in the UK so don't know how many of the classified adds would help. I do want to be able to hone myself, I like the idea of being totally self sufficient.
I will probably try find someone who can hone it for me in the UK initially, then I will have a point of reference what the blade should be like when I try myself.
Thanks

W Welcome to SRP Dave .
A Dovo is not shave ready from the factory, however a few Vendors do hone their razors prior to them leaving the store.
May I inquire where you got your Dovo from?
There are a few options if it was not honed,
1. If you give your location there may well be an experienced member near you. (can hone and give some hands on time)
2. We have member services
3. We have some very reputable Vendors

In the UK I would recommend Neil Miller at Strop Shop. Just got my straights back from him and the edges are superb.
