Thread: Hoping to pop the cherry soon

Hey guys, how are y'all? I just have a basic question because I want to try this without breaking the bank...I don't necessarily have the funds for a sweet dovo, but I saw the Dovo shavette and was curious about this...does this require honing or are the independent blades shave ready? Also, would I be needing a strop with this? I see a few different kinds... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I'm a medical student, so money is an issue...Using commercial 5 blade razors don't shave nearly close enough and are terrible for the neck...

Each independent blade that you use is disposable. It does not require honing or stropping, just replacing. There are quite a number of different shavettes available, running from quite a bit cheaper than the DOVO shavette, to much more expensive. Consider surfing around the shavette section of this site for a bit more info.

Another cheap alternative to the shavette route would be to get a sight unseen straight razor from whipped dog. I got my razor, strop, and silvertip badger brush for a pretty good price.

A lot of guys here use a double edge (DE) razor also as a somewhat cheaper (I think) or "safer" alternative. FYI

Or you could check out the classifieds section right here on SRP to get a razor at a reasonable price. That way you get to at east see a pic of what you are buying.

The shavette blades come from different makers and some people find some still irritate the skin etc. You may need to try a few blades to find the right one for you. There are sampler packs available so you can try them out.

One further suggestion to try things on the cheap... If you have a Sally Beauty Supply store near you, stop in and look for a shavette there (I believe the brand is Magic). It should only cost you about $10, and if they don't have the blades for it, just get a pack of double edge blades from any drugstore or grocery store and cut them in half. As has been said, you may have to try various brands of blades to see what is the most comfortable for your face.

You will also need your brush and soap, which can be had cheap, too. Walmart carries the Van der Hagen starter set for about $10, which has a puck of soap, boar hair brush and shaving bowl. It's not the best out there by any stretch, but good enough to get your feet wet and see if this sport is for you. You can then transition to a real straight razor, and only have to buy the razor and a strop.

Great advice. You might want to start with the real thing. A shavette can be unforgiving. Trust me, been there and done that.

Somehow popping the cherry and being a medical student don't seem to go together.
