Thread: Suggestion for those with lather making problems

I had a real problem in the beginning making lather. From what I remember, nobody suggested to me to use a shave stick to bypass the whole water to soap ration, water hardness problems, etc.

I came upon this myself. Google "shave stick video". This would have helped me immensely straight away if it would have been suggested right up front to me as a newb. And for the price of an Arco shave stick??

So, I will suggest to anybody buying their first time kit or anyone having desperate lathering issues(as I did), GET A SHAVE STICK and watch the videos!

I had great troubles trying to get Mitchells Wool Fat to lather. So I bought 3 cakes of it and just made practice lathers. It took a whole cake, but finally I came up with my method for the Fat.
On the other hand, shave sticks don't work well for me, unless I have a couple of days stubble on my face. And the friction of rubbing the stick on my face is irritating.

i think this is a common problem with most people when they start wet shaving. they don't take the time to learn how to make lather. i use shave sticks, soaps, cremes, what ever i fancy that day. but i had to, like you, develop my method. try some more with the soaps, try additives like glycerin and see if that helps. or just stick with the stick... there are lots of great ones out there.

+1 on giving the soaps another try, but don't forget, if you really prefer the sticks, that you can make any soap into a shave stick yourself using an empty (and cleaned) deodorant container or one of these: Twist-up Shaving Stick Containers, 2 oz ; there are a couple of youtube videos on the subject.

I'm having trouble with this as well. I find face lathering much easier. But I want to learn how to get a good bowl lather going as well. I have found that if I press harder with my brush I get more lather, but I'm not satisfied yet.

Have you tried adding glycerin to the bowl? I do an almond sized dollup of cream a few drops of glycerin and work my soaped up brush into it and it will eventually foam, then go to a good lather after that.

No, I have not. I don't have any glycerin.

Walmart has it. Under $5. I'm sure CVS, Walgreens, etc. might have it as well. At Walmart, it i with the other shaving stuffs.

Also, you can pick up some Creamo at one of those places and more. They make a slick shave cream(the one I use) which offers an 100% rebate as well. That was only about 6-7 dollars.

You will have brush handle-engulfing uberlather in minutes...

When it comes to buying things it's a shame that I live in Sweden. We have none of that stuff over here, especially in the area I live.

You Can buy Euro Palmolive Gut for cheap in your local,will lather with the best of them.
