Thread: New to straights and site

Hi. I'm a newb but I wanted to share my new finds. Found these at a local gun and knife show and would like to know what you guys think. I think I got a great deal on them. I know I need to send them off to be professionally honed. I can't find much about them online. The top one say genco Henry's. The bottom one says Columbia cutlery co. Full hollow ground. Any info would be appreciated.

If you put your location in the info block then SRP members in your area can easily chime in and point you to a good honer in your area, if not a mentor that might hone one for you to get you started. Many mentor will hone a couple of razors for a newb to get hem on the right path and answer about every question you can think of. Also read all the wikis you can for base info (the videos too). They look like they should clean up nicely and a Genco is a treasure in of itself. They are great shavers.

Thanks. They are not pretty yet but looks to be just surface rust. I had a good feeling about the genco. I have a sight unseen from whipped dog on the way to me. Can't wait to see what I get. Should be here in a couple days. I would love to get these two refurbished by a professional. They seem sharp but I'm not going to put them to my face until I know for sure they are ready.

Hi and welcome. The Genco looks like its seen a bit of wear but the Columbia looks to have a nice full blade. There is a thread by Oz about fixing the heel on a razor that's seen a bit of honing and the genco looks like it wouldn't need much work to reveal the heel from the stabalizer and maybe touch up the toe. The coulumbia looks like you could just clean and hone. The gencos are a good brand and it should take a nice edge Im not sure about the columbias though. Try using the search at the top right of the screen. Good luck.

Thank you. I just received my straight from whipped dog. It's nice to have a good comparison of a shave ready and these two that I thought were sharp. Definitely sending these two to him for honing. Did one pass wtg with my new straight. Not bbs but definitely a good shave. Kind of scared to do more than one pass until I get my angels and all down. My neck is hard to shave because the whiskers grow east to west. Don't want the dreaded razor burn. Any advice on shaving this tricky area?
