    Default Help with the neck!!

Ok, just finished shave number 6 and all went well made 3 passes wtg, xtg and atg sorta. I feel pretty comfortable using both hands and getting better at stretching the skin and I'm getting bbs on the cheeks and dfs on parts of the neck but I'm stuck my hair grows from the adams apple towards the ear on both sides I know if I could go against the grain in those areas they would clean up nice but I can't find a grip on the razor to achieve this. I know I'm just starting out but there has to be a way of holding the razor that I'm not picking up. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, someone must have this kind of hair growth on their neck and can help. thanks in advance

Keep your concentration high and your angles low!

Despite the high cost of living, it's still very popular.

A lot of guys, including myself, have this problem, and a search will produce many threads full of good advice. One of the best pieces of advice that I've read is not to obsess over getting bbs on the neck, as this can produce frustration and irritation (physical and mental), especially early on. Different grips and angles, really inventive skin stretching, and some careful cross-handed shaving can also improve results. The most meaningful improvements that I have personally made lately are: 1) skin stretching (with my opposite hand reaching all the way over my head and stretching from below the jaw line) and using very, very light pressure; 2) not letting the angle of the razor get too flat (spine too close to the skin- careful, though, you also don't want the angle too steep); 3) most importantly, trust the next pass- don't obsess on getting every hair during a single pass. Just some things that I've learned lately (even though I've read things like this many times)...YMMV!

Yeah I have problems with that area myself; what I found works for me is to fold the scales all the way to the spine of the blade and then doinga syching cut. Even then I'll only get BBS there if I work at quite a bit until it gets to the point of being uncomfortable, so I'll just get it close enough and call it good.

What I used to do is shave the neck separately. Use the dry skin on the upper face to stretch and raise the stubble. Practice on a dry face to see which ways raise the stubble the most. You can stretch the wrong way and pull it flatter. As well as the great advice here on different grips.

I don't regard beard direction below the jawline, and yes mine is a mass of whorls and direction changes. I shave up, then down, then touch up as needed. I have a challenging beard that grows almost to the collar bone and an Ichabod Crane adams apple. Works for me.

One thing that helps me is I do not re-lather my entire face on me 2nd or 3rd pass. I do it in parts. First pass is down so my entire face gets lathered and I work my way down. 2nd pass is up on the neck so I only lather my neck and only on one side. I start on my left side working up while stretching downward. Now there is a significant valley that I reach about midway up the neck. A 3" blade can't fit. So I grab skin just above my jawline and stretch upward pulling the neck skin above the valley and in a flatter area. Had I lathered my entire face, I would not have been able to stretch from that location. This technique works for me in other areas as well.
As for growth from the Adam's apple toward the ear, I have the same problem. If I'm determined to get bbs there, I gold the razor back to form a sort of v shape. I stretch the skin back toward the ear and position the razor straight up with tang down and very carefully with a light touch work from side of neck toward the Adam's apple. The valley that I mentioned on my neck is vertical so the the razor fits in. Most days I don't take the time for this but I can if needed.
    Good luck!!
