Default Just ordered a straight razor and strop

Hello everyone. I am fairly new to this forum but have been shaving with a shavette for some time now and thanks to some encouragement from members here have decided to get a straight razor. This is what is either on the way or already here.

New Dovo Best Value Half Hollow 5/8
Poor Mans Strop Kit (including strop, balsa, and pastes)
    Chinese River Stone (finishing stone)

I believe this will get me by until I can invest in a Norton 4000/8000 Hone.

Of course I have everything else such as brush and soap ect.…

Thanks to everyone as I begin to slowly spend my retirement money. Lol

why spend it slowly? go out with a flourish!

welcome to SRP! yes often we are enablers but we do have a good support system, in the form of people who have suffered the various "AD" problems longer and vicariously let us enjoy their sins through pictures.

may you have 50 years to enjoy your retirement.

If your still spending slowly then leave the site quickly and don't come back or be prepared to loose money quicker and quicker as time goes by. The problem is your told how good it is and you want to try too. Unfortunately there are so many things to try.

Steel I see by your pic that you are a cigar enthusiast.

Welcome to SRP and the world of Straight Razors, and I have to agree with the above that if you want to spend your money slowly you came to the wrong place.

So Steel will I assume if you did this after the good guidance from members here then your Dovo is arriving shave ready right? If not spend just a little more of that retirement fund on a professional honing. Also I wouldn't anticipate you needing to use the stone for a while yet. Good luck.

You are correct. It comes professionally honed and shave ready I hope you're right about not needing the stone for a while but I have been spoiled using feather blades in my Shavette and my stropping skills are nill and void. I plan to strop REALLY slow and steady with a taught strop, no pressure, and flipping on spine but I am positive that I will still have much to learn. Honing on the other hand I have much experience in and although there are some big differences in straights compared to knives eg…angle, pressure, ect. There are also similarities that will be helpful. So I expect a learning curve in it all but when you enjoy it the learning curve just doesn't matter. What does matter is knowing people have traveled this road successfully before you and hope + enjoyment =perseverance=success=more enjoyment.

Just one last piece of advise and again you probable already know this but don't strop it before your first shave.
