A bit of advice needed
Hello, I'm going to start shaving with a straight razor next week.
The plan is to take it slowly and do as is adviced in the beginners guide.
At the moment I'm still using my Gilette Fusion and I had the intention to keep on using it.
However, my skin is getting more and more irritated. (It might be a psychological issue, since I'm dying to use my straight razor)
I'm thinking of buying a DE razor to use as backup, is that a wise thing to do?
Or would it take me to long to get used to the DE razor?
Another aspect that coms to mind is travel.
I imagine it's a lot easier to take a DE razor and some blades with me instead of the straight razor.
True or false? What do you guys travel with?
YvesSometimes I feel normal.
Then it's time to lay down and wait for it to pass.

I'd break off the Fusion as soon as I got a DE, yes it's a good idea, many of us use both a DE & a straight.
On the travel issue, probably so, but I load everything in the bottom of the plane when I travel, I don't carry my shaving kit in my carry-on.
Enjoy the journey.

I travel with my straights and all the accoutrements.
Most Straight Razors fit nicely in toothpaste carriers.
The rest of the equipment needs little less creativity.
And yes, belly of the A/C is the order of the day and the TSA.Malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium

When away from home I take my Feather Str8 and ProGuards. Just so much easier.

I am traveling currently, I have one straight, one d/e, a strop, and a load of soaps and creams ( most of which I have bought on hols) I also have an assortment of aftershaves. I wish I had packed a finisher though as my edge feels slightly off, but that could just be the cold weather. Oh and I have a brush obviously

If you're just beginning to straight shave, I would not throw a DE into the mix. DEs are great, I use them all the time, but they have their own learning curve/skill set. I wouldn't want to try learning them both at the same time. If you still want to use both DEs and straights, I would use the DE exclusively until I achieved mastery of it. Good luck.

I travel with my straights as I always have a checked bag even on an overnight trip.
I take at least two straights, strop, brush and soaps creams of my whim.
I have never ended up needing the additional razor(s) but the good lord knows if I did not take them it would be

Thanked: 3225I would learn the DE first and then tackle the straight. That is what I would do because I use a DE when I travel by car and a twin blade cart when I go by air. I have better things to do on holidays than to take more than I need to and the only thing that goes into checked baggage is stuff that I don't care about if it gets lost/stolen. Again, each to their own.

I travel with a DE razor in my shaving kit--along with some blades, a travel brush, shaving stick, and some aftershave/cologne.
