Don't Get Cocky Buster
I've been using a straight for close to three months now and only nicked myself twice. So I thought I was the man and found out indeed I wasn't. I put a one inch nick right under my side burns--- worse cut yet. I feel more stupid than anything. So don't get cocky, buster and remember that damn thing is called a razor for a reason ---it's shaaaaarpppp. Funny how that can slip your mind.

Justin,
You've entered the next phase of straight razor shaving. I think most of us have done exactly what you describe...I know I did--and still have the oh so faint scar to prove it.
Cheers,
Ed

Thanks Ed and mparker762. Kind of feel like I'm going through a second growing pains stage. I'm glad I nicked myself so now I'll take more time and be more careful.

Ahh, yes, I have a few scars from my own inattention during that time. I agree, you will slow down & become more aware of where that blade is at & what it is doing.

I'm with you all on this one. However I would like to add that just about the stupidest thing I've done is shave after a drink. Don't even try it .....

Thanked: 0Wow, since I am only into my first month of shaving with straights, I don't know if I qualify to respond. After what I thought was a degree of expertise, I figured I was ready to talk to my wife and shave at the same time. She loves to watch and tell me that it takes so long and why am I so obsessed. Boy was I wrong. I engaged her because I thought I had this thing down pat. And then it came, a nice little gash under my chin just above the adams apple. It brought me down to earth. She even suggested a visit to our insurance guy for a new policy for extra protection. Hey, I still love it and it is our fraternity. So I prepare myself for more gashes, and I prepare you guys for more questions from me and thanks for an ear, or in this case a keyboard and screen to listen.

I can share this feeling too, i was feeling good about myself until last week.
After over one month of only straight shaving and no nicks, i was feeling a bit cocky.
I was practicing left handed across the grain on my left cheek, and for some unknown reason i had a slip of the mind, and the hand which resulted in me placing the blade perpendicular to my skin. The sharp sting let me know i had done wrong!
After the shave I resumed my cockyness after examining my face in the mirror and realising that there wasn't a mark.
HOWEVER!
I was quickly brought down to earth when the next day a great big red stripe running down my left cheek appeared. It got worse for three days before eventually disappearing.
Now i never let my mind wander!

Yup, over 6 months with a straight, BIG BIIIIGGGG scar under my sideburn when I first started then nothin until last week.
Thought I was soooo good then put an inch and a half cut down my left cheek
Pissed blood for an hour even with a steptic pencil (it was an undercut like a flap)
Have a good one
