    What about all the other stuff, though? Don't you still need to buy that, too? I thought you were on to a winner with one of those kits.

    I think really, to get started, you need a razor. My son stropped using his leather trousers belt for a year. You CAN (in a pinch) apply cream with your hands, and a brush will cost 5 bucks from a chemist. Kits are fine if you like the razor, but I'd rather buy the razor I like and strop on a belt or folded newspaper than a razor I SORT of like just to get the other stuff.

    Which dovo are you referring to?

    I've messaged the guy from the shaving room The Shaving Room

    For sale is this mint condition, as new Dovo "Black Star" 5/8 straight razor. I bought this from The Invisible Edge so here's their description:

    Dovo’s 141583 model ‘Black Star’ razor - a very classy piece with black tang and spine, setting off the gold-washed blade to perfection. On this model the Pakkawood scales are stained deep red, enhancing the overall look of quality. Supplied in attractive blue metal case as shown.

    This razor comes shave ready and has had minimal use from new as I've decided straight shaving isn't for me. Other than being made shave ready it has not been honed since. I also have my Thiers Issard Le Grelot and a 3" Big Daddy strop for sale here as well so I'd happily consider a bundle price.

    It seems to me that you're looking at either new or as-new Dovos, so you can't really go wrong. You've found a good selection of blades, it all just depends, now, on which you like best and how much you're willing to spend.

    Got my heart set on the black star, it just needs to be for a reasonable price as a poor student shouldn't spend money on such executive luxuries.

    One quick question though;
    The reviews for the blade seem pretty good, however read 2 or 3 saying that it doesn't open and close straight meaning the blade rubs the scales, do you think this can be realigned at the pin or will this be a deal breaker. As a newbie I'm not sure how bad this is but can't imagine it would be good for the blade.

    That looks like a good razor, the profile is pretty standard and will be a good beginner's razor. As far as the blade hitting the scales goes, in my opinion it's possible that being that the scales are wooden the scales may be slightly warped. It's possible that it could be un-pinned and maybe a washer used to fix the problem. I have some razors with the same problem. It doesn't bother me too much, I just need to remember to close the razor very carefully. Of course, if the blade DOES hit the scales it'll dull the edge. Another option is to buy new scales, or buy a very cheap razor with a stuffed blade JUST for the scales.

    I haven't been able to view the ad, so I'm not sure if the razor has been honed. If not, it'll need to be honed, and maybe you could ask the honer to try and re-align the scales or even put new ones on?

    It was bought from the invisible edge so was bought honed, and since then it's not really been used as he's not into SE more DE, so he said it should still be shave ready.

    As for the scales the seller doesn't mention any issues, just something I read from other online reviews.

    I can get it for £90 with the 3" Big Daddy strop, worth it?

    Sorry to bump thread, just wanted to know your thoughts.

    I'm pretty desperate to get started but don't want to waste money.
