Recommendations for a beginners setup
Thanks to the awesome members here at the SRP I was talked out of wasting $80 on a bogus starter kit. I now need to acquire a decent razor and strop for $80. Any suggestions?
I have read a few posts about the sight unseen razors from whipped dog for $40. This is my front runner at the moment. Any thoughts?
How about a good strop in the $30 range? I have found a few in that range but nothing that is 3in wide.
Thanks for the input.

Thanked: 612 inches is plenty good... Trust me you will trash your first strop within the first year of stropping

You are still going to need to do an x stroke on a 3" strop, so you may as well get a 2" if you are on a tight budget.

And learning on a 2" will reenforce the x-stroke more. If you start on a 3" you may tend to just go up and back without the x-ing. Then at a later date you may get a 2" and have to learn it again. The 2-2 1/2" strops IMO should be mandatory to learn on. It reinforces good technique.

Thanked: 6Ill second the poor mans strop its not the prettiest thing but its completely functional and dont forget your brush and soap, good prep makes a world of difference. You may also check the classified section here, ive picked up a couple georgous razors that are great shavers for under 40 each and with a little time spent browsing through you will probably find a great deal too.

Here you go:
Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

The Illinois #206 strop (mentioned by DPM1267 above) is my only strop, and I've used it since 2006. I condition it once or twice a year with conditioning paste or lather, and it's still supple and has a decent "draw". As a beginner, I nicked the edges a good bit; once I stopped doing that, I sanded those spots lightly and applied the conditioning paste to where I'd sanded, and now you'd never know.
Keep your pivot dry!

That is probably what I will do. Not sure about the 2in strop though.
