Default Noob needs help identifying first razor

Ok I have been wanting a straight razor for a while,we'll today i finally made the jump and joined the forum...I stumbled across what I believe is a great deal and practically got this razor for free...the only issue I have is that I do not know any brand or info on where it was made and the quality...it seems solid...not too heavy ,one peice scale that looks almost like aluminum, brass rivets and the only mark on the blade is "BLUE STEEL"...sadly enough the other side looks like it has been ground down...the blade is very sharp appears to be good quality and passes the "fingernail test"...any info on this peice would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to SRP.

I think at this point your main tasks are to get the razor properly honed and buying a strop. If you're not using shaving soap/cream already, it would be smart to get started on this too.

The counsel that you've received is sound and very good!! Getting it 'properly' honed is the first step and to maintain that edge you need a decent strop! To be able to shave, you will need a brush and shaving soap. The canned good just isn't designed to be used with a straight!

While you may have 'thought' that the razor was 'very sharp' until you actually shave with a Truly Shave Ready Razor, you don't fully understand the difference!

Also, if that was a truly shave ready razor when you ran the blade across your finger you'd have Killed the Blade's Edge! When you get your razor back from honing, please do only one 'test' and that is the shave test! As far as I know everyone who hones either professionally or as a friend always send the razor test shaved, stropped, oiled and ready to go!

You will find Pro Honers in the Classifieds, please contact one of them so that you can start this journey down an older but better way of shaving!

You can also order a beginners strop here:

He's a highly respected member here, his work is nice, I know as I bought one for my son's first strop and it was a birthday present!

Enjoy the trip! It's worth it!
