Thread: 2 weeks in

I have been lurking for some time now thought I would finally say hi. I am on my 2nd week of the amazing world of straight razor shaving. By now I don't have nicks daily anymore my left hand is getting much better the shaves are pretty comfortable now. I am really enjoying the experience and learning a new life skill, and in a rushed world it's nice to take my time with something in the morning.

I am still having trouble around the chin and lips but I know it will come with time and practice.

How many Razors do you guys own? I feel I need to have another just in case. But I can see myself getting caught up and having dozens in a few years.

I have 1/2 dozen or so that are shave ready. At least that many more that are awaiting honing and at least another 2 dozen in various states of repair or in the project pile. Have another 9 that I'm afraid to touch and will probably send out for restoration at some point. I find it hard to say no on a good deal (or what I percieve to be a good deal at that point in time).

Having a second razor is a great idea. If/When you need to get it honed, you have a second shave ready one ready to go.

I guess you really don't need more than one blade. But what if you drop it mid shave? Moreover, I hear say that resting a blade for a day between shaves is a good thing! Two is certainly the way to go.

Man, I wonder what another size would be like... Man I wonder what another grind would be like...

You know, I think I am settled! I love this grind and size! Maybe I should build or buy a seven day set!!

1 is necessary, 2 is good, more is a luxury/obsession. Apart from covering you in the event of damaging your blade, having a second one means you don't have to go without while having your razor honed. As for numbers, I probably have a couple dozen (give or take a bunch that are mid-restore). That sounds pretty crazy and from a practical point of view is completely excessive, but compared to others, I'm a rank amateur in the razor accumulation stakes. My particular form of RAD resulted from the discovery that I enjoy restoring vintage blades, quickly followed by the discovery that I never seem to get around to selling the ones I've done...

Oh, and if you want a laugh, search out the various threads here on resting razors between shaves. Let's just say there have been some debates about that one.

I got by on one for a good while, then purchased a second one (in part b/c of the "resting razors" period that Cangooner mentions!). I rotated those two razors for over five years, with a double-edge (DE) playing a supporting role. I just added two more, just for fun. Of my four, one is a plain-jane Dovo, the other three are plainer-jane vintage jobs of no particular pedigree.
