My new(?) razor
Gday all,
so I had this memory of my dad talking once about a straight razor this his grandfather owned, so I went searching at my parents house, and hey presto! but its not in the best nick, is there anything I can do to get it back to top condition? honing or something? is there someone in Syd that can help out with this?
anyway, it says 'GOTTA' on the blade, and also 'superfine' and 'silver steel'.
only other info is "Finest Sheffield Steel, Forged and real hollow, ground in England"
is this a decent razor from your experience?

Thanked: 375a good cleaning and some polish, careful with the polish around the gold, it'll probably remove it. looks in good shape to me. I believe you have quite a few fellows in your neck of the world, that could probably get that honed up for you. I'm sure they'll chime in

Thanked: 375Good Morning! or Night!
I like Blue magic, could try Maa's, or flitz. I know your razor says "silver steel" but honestly it's probably a very small amount in the steel if any, don't know this for a fact, just from stuff I've read on here.
Your razor appears from the pic's to just have surface rust and I would think it should come off easy.Last edited by Trimmy72; 02-18-2014 at 11:09 AM.

Thanked: 3225Yea, from the photos I'd go along with what Chris has said. It should clean up easily with some metal polish but try not to polish over the gold wash. There are a fair number of Ozzie members who will likely comment too. Maybe they can set you up with somebody to hone it for you that is near by, That is a quality vintage blade and worth the effort. Enjoy.

Thanked: 4826Nice score on a beautiful family heirloom. I have one as well, they are always the best shavers. I believe GOTTA was a mark of Grah and Plumacher, they had several marks. I can't offer any age specifics.
