I started with a shavette, then after reading on this forum ended up buying a proper straight, which led to buying many other straights, followed by honing stones so be carful it creeps up on you. I find the straight much more forgiving than the shavette, but I do own a DE for traveling ( after My foot slipped during a straight shave in a campsite shower block) the DE is much better than any cartridge. Do a face map though it will help no matter what you decide. Good luck

Any choice is an okay choice, but if your end goal is a straight razor, personally, I'd just start there.
