As fellow goatee and mustachio person I have a couple of 3/8 razors that I use for close trimming when I need to be very presentable. Otherwise I just shave, carefully, up to the edges of my goatee and mustache, utilizing the heel of the razor where needed around my jaw area.

3/8 is the width of the blade. Most shavers, it seems, don't utilize the heel and rely on the toe for most trimming. A narrow blade, like the 3/8 makes it easier to use the heel for close trimming in odd places (like parts of the neck).

i have a goatie and still use any razor in my set as I use the centre of the edge working away from my goatie
I have both round & square points and 4/8" to 1" all used in the same manner with out ay problems
the square points give the option for end on trimming a bit easier I think
    Saved,
    to shave another day.

I once converted a broken SR into a "Shorty" thst worked really well for facial sculpting, detailed work. I got a SR in a bundle deal that had 1/3 of the blade broken so I cut/shaped the blade and it honed and turned out great! IIRC the cutting edge was around 1.5" long so worked well getting in those tight spots.

I use the heel of my razor as well when trimming the sides of the portion on my lower lip but a couple times have tagged my nose in the process.

The Shorty was more an exercise in saving a razor with a broken blade but worked really well!
