Thanked: 12A lot of guys here really like the Proraso pre shave cream. I know it's not an oil but it is fairly cheap... and will last a while. I read a recent thread about "natural" oils and the shaves guys were getting off them. It was things like Coconut oil, Olive oil, Grapeseed oil, etc. Cheapest you might try that is made for skin could be baby oil, it is very slick and supposedly yields some good shaves according to the members here
A lot of the members in that thread really liked the coconut oil and used it both pre and post shave. Those will be the cheapest oils you can get out there. But if you are after an actual pre shave with scents and the like this probably isn't for you.
As for inexpensive name brand pre shave oils, I'm not 100% sure on those as I've only ever used the Art of Shaving oil, which is very good (and very expensive ). I'm sure some other members will be around with some better options for you.Last edited by chapman; 03-17-2014 at 05:37 AM.

I like Shave Secret. It can be bought at Wal mart for a lil under 4 bux. It has a nice clove scent and tingly sensation.

I liked what I read about glycerin, so I used it as my first preshave treatment for my first test shave. I lathered right over it. It came out great felt great, looks great, not bad for my first time with a SR.

I've tried several oils & don't care for them, most showed no significant ease in my shave, plus my skin is oily to begin with & rinsing off some oil residue is a pain.
I've posted this product before, love it, cheap, lasts over 6 months, no scent to speak of, washes off completely with water, no residue & most of all it softens my whiskers.

After the gym, I was at the grocery store for my protein, some nice Sushi, and wandered by the shaving section and found some Cromwell and Cruthers Shave oil, came in a little bottle with an eye dropper, says to wet the face, put a small amount on palm of hand, and rub into the face. Say's it's made in Canada, undoubtedly a left over from our British background, and say's it can actually substitute for a shaving cream lather??
Never tried a "shaving oil" before, going to give it a try next shave...very cheap as well at $4.99.

If "cheap" is the focus I'd have to say Olive Oil. I believe Mediterranean Countries have been using Olive Oil for skin benefits for a long time. I have never tried any Shave Oil but I would try olive oil first if I intended to give it a try.
Biggest benefit? You probably already have it available or could borrow a bit from a friend/neighbor and you'd completely avoid having a bottle of miscellaneous whatever sitting around that you dislike or does not work. Also, you'd find out if adding pre-shave oil gives you the result you are looking for.

Thanked: 5I tried the shave secret and was pleasantly surprised. My only issue was it left my fingers slick and took a bit to wash off before I was comfortable handling my razor. I rally use any pre shave. I just lather up again if I feel dry.

+1 on shave secret shave oil. Cheap. At walmart. Sensation is awesome. I will continue to buy it, if nothing, for the sensation and smell.
Prahston does have a point, though. Wouldn't hurt to try olive oil.
