Hello Ziggy and welcome to SRP.
Good question to ask "before" you buy and you are sure to receive good advice here.
My 2 cents;
You could do far worse than purchasing that set up as your first purchase.
One concern you might have is the razor will most likely not be shave ready when you receive it.
Nothing worse than waiting for the blade to arrive and then having to send it back out for honing.
You might consider a cheaper shave ready razor and strop to make your mistakes and learn on first.S.L.A.M.,.......SHAVE LIKE A MAN!!!

Thanked: 4828Royal shaves web site indicates that they are SRP supporters, if it is close to you, and that is part of the reason you were choosing them, email them and ask them how the razors are sharpened for customers. I just had a very quick look around their site, but it is possible that stuff will come truly shave ready. That really is the most important part of buying your first razor. Next to that is somewhere convenient to buy. A kit is often a good buy, but the strops in many of them are a little lacking, which is what makes the SRD kits kind of different in that you get to choose the different components. Another thing that you may want to consider is that unless you are getting a super inexpensive strop, the availability of replacements leather is a good plan. Just a couple of thoughts.

From RS fact page
All of our straight razors are considered "ready-to-shave" by the manufacturer. Certain companies will offer a sharper out-of-the-box blade than others, but every razor that we sell has been expertly honed by the factory prior to shipping. You will still need to strop the razor before each use to warm and align the blade to give it proper structure for shaving. Your technique is very important and you should visit Youtube to see proper stropping techniques.
We all know most manufacturers shave ready is not truly shave ready

Thanked: 0WOW! GREAT info everyone! Thank you for the advice and giving good feedback on pricing. I was exploring SRD's Dovo sets but all of the ones I checked are out of stock. I will attempt to give them a call in a few hours to see if they have an eta on anything. I especially like the certificate for a free honing. I have to say I am really excited!!!!! I'm going to ask if I can get my new set shipped to an APO or if I have to wait until I get home! The anticipation is killing me but whats more entertaining that anything is the response I'm getting from my buddies. The most popular response I'm getting is "You DO know its the 21st century right??" HAH!

Thanked: 154That looks like a good kit at a reasonable price. DOVO razors do come shave ready, except for perhaps needing to be stropped.

Thanked: 12Don't let 'em get you down! People always look at me like I'm a crazy person when I tell them I use a Straight. It's not really a daily topic for conversation, mind you, but when it does come up most people are pretty incredulous.
If you do end up getting a razor from SRD be sure to NOT strop it when you get it! Simply just wipe off the oil that will be on the blade for protection and start shaving The blade will be shave ready for you from them and stropping it, in a newbies hands, may ruin the edge. You'll then have a benchmark set on what the edge should feel like every time, and after stropping for your next shave you will know whether or not your stropping technique was sound!
