Birthday Razor
Good afternoon, my wife suggested I purchase a new razor for my birthday; should I go with the tried-and-true Mach 3 or splurge on a Fusion Pro-glide?
Actually, I *was* looking at DE razors, but have taken a shine to the straight variety. The razors I am considering are the Boker King Cutter (Model 55), Dovo Model 240, and the Ralf Aust Model 1402. Of the three, the Ralf Aust kinda "jumps" out at me, but I have no reasoning behind that. I will be purchasing the whole kit-and-caboodle, likely from SRD, and would love feed back on the three listed above. If there is another I should be looking at in the $125-$150 range, do tell. Otherwise, I look to purchase one of SRD' kits in May, upgraded to a 3" strop.
Thank you for any information you care to share!

I don't have any experience with the razors themselves, but I LOVE my SRD 3" Black Latigo strop. Just as a vendor, you won't go wrong ordering from SRD either... the shipping is super fast, the service is awesome and they definitely stand behind the products they sell.
Either of those razors should be good, and since it will be honed to shave ready by Lynn, it will definitely have a fantastic edge on it.

Out of the 3 I prefer the Ralf Aust personally and have owned an Aust, several Bokers and several Dovos. Definitely get the 3 inch strop. No question on that.

I almost hard a heart attack when I read that first part.
I only have experience with the King Cutter. The wife bought it for me for my Bday. I am happy with it. Its a little on the light side but it is a super easy razor to use, comfortable to work with, and holds a nice edge. Nice looking blade ethcing as well.-David

Happy birthday! Get them all that way there are no regrets and let RAD begin.
P.S. Next year update this thread and let us know how many straight razors you own.Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Thanks for the reinforcement on the three-incher, I have been led to believe that is the best thing I can do to help myself a new stopper. And it is always good to hear approval concerning the choice of vendor!
More good tidings on the strop... Do you happen to have some good "in-the-flesh" (side pun, heh) photos of that Aust razor? The stock pictures look good, but don't they always?
Do you have any personal pics of the razor you would be willing to share?
No way; my wife affords me some luxuries, but I gotta space them out! I have a month and a half to decide, so I'm doing my due diligence.
On another tack, I have a rather full face; (still fat, getting smaller) is there a particular blade profile or grind I should be looking at/ avoiding? Or just stop over-thinking it and pick up a good standard 5/8th blade from one of the reputable manufacturers and get to it?
Again, appreciated!Last edited by Tryin; 04-04-2014 at 07:41 PM.

Couldn't see you going wrong with any of the razors. I have the Ralf Aust and would recommend it. I also have both a Latigo anf English Bridle 3 inch strop from SRD and would recommend either although I prefer the English Bridle.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed
