Welcome to the addiction! BTW, great way to start with the SRD set.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 1i'm leaning towards the 6/8 dovo best as my first. i've been reading everything i can here and on other forums. the only real question i have is a majority of people who have these make it seem like the scales will break sooner than later. i found on a site that sells them that it says do not open the razor more than 2/3rds the way around. make sure moisture doesn't get on the pivot pin (common sense) etc.
it honestly sounds like i should order new scales right away. but if that's the case would i be better off spending a little more for a better straight razor??
the only reason i ask is you guys (and others) also say it's a addiction. so go cheap now and consider this more of a practice piece (by that i mean so i can learn to strop and hone) and upgrade later or upgrade now and upgrade later hahaha?
you know this is going to be a fun ride when you don't even own a real straight razor yet. but, the addiction already hit you.

Unless someone more experience corrects me, I don't think the majority of people who have new Dovo best quality have a problem with scales breaking, neither am I sure what is meant by not opening the scales more than 2/3 of the way. Re: the pivot pin getting wet, it is "wet" shaving and it's going to be hard to concentrate of never getting the pin wet. Some people try to keep everything as dry as possible, others (with a lot of experience) submerge the whole razor in water. All parts of a razor are made to "get" wet, but not "stay" wet.
I wouldn't worry about extra scales or wetness during your shave. Just do a good job of handling with care, and maintaining it after and between shaves.Just call me Harold
