Must Get Schooled in the Razor Arts - Washington D.C.
Hi all, I'm getting into straight razor shaving and need to get trained. Does anyone know any mentors in the DC area who give regular instruction? Pfries kindly mentioned LegalBeagle's in Alexandria. I've got a practice razor and strop (as well as a real razor I bought from MrDavid and a real strop from Tony Miller).
Happy to join and I appreciate the help!

I've been unable to find a member in the DC area, so I wonder if anyone here knows of a barber in the area who instructs. I've been shaving with my SR for about 2 weeks now, but it's really tugging, so I really need to learn the rest of the SR cycle (preferably in person from one practiced in the Ways of the SR). Thanks!

Waiting for legalbeagal is your best bet. A second or maybe even third choice is available, but I understand if you'd like to wait a bit. I'm out in Stephens City. It's about an hour and 30 min west of you, maybe less. Because I'm home caring my Father, I'd prefer to stay near here. You are welcome to drive out and visit. You might also be headed to this way sometime. We could also meet somewhere in between, this being motorcycle season. Maybe, like Marshall, VA? Good wings and sitting outside showing you how to hone wouldn't likely get a police response. I also go to Alexandria on occasion. Today, coincidentally, I'm taking my wife out to eat near there.
So, in the future we might find a way to meet-up. Feel free to PM.
I don't post much anymore, but I do know a little about honing and stropping. I'm just going to throw the offer out there for you to consider.

AFDavis, that's very kind of you and I wish I could've thanked you before now. I've still been unable to connect with anyone nearby and I NEED to get over the honing obstacle so I can keep shaving. I loved shaving when the blade was sharp.
You're right that it's a hike out to Stephens City, but a hike I'd be willing to make to take you up on your gracious offer. If you plan to come anywhere near Alexandria in the near future, please let me know, too. I have the requisite gear. Thanks again for reaching out!

I'm also in the DC area and haven't had much luck finding local mentors (especially for honing). With that said, between the honing work done by @cudarunner via mail and the stropping lessons from @razorfeld via email, I've gotten to where I get amazing shaves after just a few months. If the razor is tugging, you might want to send it for honing just to be sure that it's actually sharp. You can't really learn to shave if the blade isn't cutting right. After that, just focus on the stropping. Cudarunner lives in WA state, but it still only took a little over a week to send him the razors, have them honed, and get them back.
