Thread: Disaster Shave

Every once in a while you'll have that shave. You know the one. Every thing goes well at first but as the shave proceeds you notice that things just aren't working out quite as smoothly as normal. By the end, you've gone from effortless shaver to torture victim, covered in razor burn and weepers, full of self doubt and wanting to redo the previous half hour.

Here's a place to discuss your disaster shaves. Please share so we can all be reminded that our art is occassionally paid for in blood....and maybe learn a little from each other's mistakes.

Early on I learned if you don't take the time to build a proper lather, or fix one that is too dry, it just isn't comfortable and you will likely feel the sting of the styptic pencil.

As pilots say, ""When it's wrong on the ground it only gets worse in the air."

Sometimes you just need to quit after 10-minutes with the knowledge your beard will still be there tomorrow and better shaves are coming.

Seems to me that after about straight shave number 5 I found myself reverting to old bad habits for a few shaves. Having had a few great straight shaves, I began to move mush faster and started taking shortcuts: not pulling skin tight for a pass, not keeping conscious of maintaining a proper angle to my face, etc. After a couple of of brushes with near hemorrhagic shock, I learned to cling to my fundamentals...
