    Default Newbie Here

Hi all I just joined your forum. I've been wet shaving for over a year now and have used a DE razor for a couple of months. My goal is to use a straight razor. I know little about them and have started to read and explore.

I'd like to get a quality razor, doesn't need to be the most or least expensive. I realize asking what people suggest is a matter of taste. But, I'd be very interested in your thoughts and about what I need to do to learn this technique. Also, I notice different size blades. How do I know what's best for me without having to buy a bunch right away?
Thanks and I'll be lurking here for a while to get the hang of it.

    sdpike, Welcome to SRP!

You won't know what size and type of razor is best for you until you have tried different ones, but a hollow ground 5/8 or 6/8 blade is often recommended for a first razor. If you buy a quality straight razor that has been sharpened by a pro and read the advice for beginners in the following link you would be well on your way.

    Welcome to SRP

I started out with a 5/8 and found it great to learn on. I now prefer 6/8 and wish I had started my collection with them. I still is the 5/8 but will skip them often. 7/8 and 8/8 are BIG. I have them, shave with them but prefer 6/8 for weight and maneuverability. Just my two cents.

Have fun. Can't go wrong with any size

Welcome. +1 on the advice for a 5/8 razor. If you are going to buy one, don't go to eBay just yet or you will spend good money on bad razors. There are plenty of guys here that can set you up with a good shave ready razor and answer questions about it. Try SRD, Lynn has several new razors in kits for a reasonable price to get you going.

Welcome to SRP! I say go with a 6/8 razor since it's dead center in the range of sizes. If you are not up for buying new, be sure to check out the Classifieds as there are usually some good deals to be found there. Good luck!

Thanks another question. I read the Grim blades should be avoided. Yet a vendor is saying that Tim Zowada joined them and they make a great blade True?

I highly recommend going with a proven brand sold through a reputable vendor if you are buying new. Dovo and Ralf Aust are two popular choices.
