I even read all the info here, seen all the pics, videos and so on, I know how to use X way, that I should always put the back of the razor on the stone - not lifting it up, and that I should do both sides equal hone, and with the face of the razor
But still, you know I guess it is something you need to have a "feeling"
Yes, I had success. But very slowly compared to most.

    Default It ain't easy

I found honing (used a norton 4/8) to be very difficult - I read and watched everything in the resource section, followed the Honing forum very closely and read back. I approach light touch, fine motor tasks with alot of confidence - but honing takes alot of practice, much more than I imagined. I would say 20-25 hours for me before I think I had the feel for the lightness of the touch - maintaining the proper torque and light touch really took alot of time for me.

My advice is not to go at it for hours on end, but rather take your time and do an hour a day, let your brain adjust, in a month, you will have it - but don't expect to get it in a weekend.

Default How hard to hone it yourself

Get the razor honed. Practice shaving. Honing is not hard. But, it does take time, practice, and patience. With that comes experience. Straight Razor Shaving is not about honing. It's about learning to get the smoothest, most comfortable, and closest shave possible.

You will learn to hone, and strop. These are learned skills. But wouldn't it be nice to be able to use a straight razor first.

You bought a lot of tools, you need to learn how to use these tools. It takes time.

Do you have a Strop or a pasted strop? Just because you use a straight razor dosen't mean you have to spend a lot of money. A good shave ready razor, a strop, and a pasted strop will do the trick for now. Believe me, you'll get to use your hones.
