Reading on some other forums I understand that straights don't particularly respond well to wet environments and I'd hate to be in a position where I'd have to neglect proper blade care in the interest of carrying on with training.

Thanks again for the advice on the Edwin Jagger. I'm looking at that as well as a Murker, either the 23C or the 38C. General consensus seems to be that closed combs are safer(?) and I don't mind taking the time to get my technique down before I move on to open comb or straight.
First - Thank you for your service.

Second - It is my opinion that closed combs (straight bars) are far less aggressive. I started with a straight bar, then a slant and finally an open comb. I believe the OC is far more aggressive than the first two.

If I use a straight bar now, it feels like a cartridge razor without the tugging.

If time is an issue, I think your leaning in the right direction. Once you have your technique and blade choice down, your shaves will be quick and much better than a cartridge.

    Take care,
    Jason

Been a log time since I was playing soldier, but given that you're in the military, the DE will be the best choice I think. You can be faster sooner with a DE than you can with a CT, and as Jason said you will soon be getting better shaves with a DE than you would with a Cart razor. It's all in the wrist .
