Default Dubl Duck Restoration for a Newbie

    Hello Gents,

Newbie here. Been reading around the forum for a couple months. Decided to give straight razor shaving a shot; I ordered my first straight razor week before last. Gold dollar cheapie... Wanted to try it out and see if I liked straight razor shaving before springing for an expensive blade. The experience was terrible! I bought it "shave ready" off eBay and I believe that it was anything but. It did look like it had been touched up with a hone but when I tried to shave with it just drug across my face more pulling hairs out them "cutting" them. Fortunately I did not cut myself as I only tried my upper face and did not dare attempt shaving my neck.

Anyway… Long story short before throwing in the towel based on an $18 razor I decided that I would give it one more shot. Get a quality blade and have a professional get me set up. Just ordered a strop from well shaved gentlemen (ordered beginners strop also). After combing eBay for preowned vintage razors that were in good shape I fell in love with the Dubl Duck Wonderedge razor. After reading around on the form in finding out that it was a very desirable razor, I decided I would find one in decent shape and try to have a professional restore it and make it shave ready. I figure if I go this route I can at least get back most of the money I have invested.

My question is, is there someone out there who would be willing to help me get this razor to a point that I can give it (and straight razor shaving in general) an honest effort? FWIW I have $112 invested in the razor. I felt like that was "pretty fair" considering it's in "okay" shape already (no nics in blade, no pitting, etc). Pictures of the razor are below. Welcome to SRP. It appears to me that you've got a goldedge, not a wonderedge. At least that is what is in the photos. On my monitor screen it is hard to tell, but if the front side (mark side) is as clean as the back side (pile side), all you'll need is pro honing IMO. Go to the SRP classifieds in the tool bar above, look for 'vendor services' and a member who hones for a nominal fee can get you fixed up. Check out the beginner's guide for more info if you haven't already done so ....... Straight Razor Place Library:Books/Beginners Guide - Straight Razor Place Library

    nice razor.

check the member services under the classifieds on this site. I believe any one of them would be able to help you with getting this razor to shave ready. They can also fix any issues it may have. I have been surprised by every one of my ebay razors. some are noticeable in pictures, others need to be held to find problems. just find the one closest to you.

    Welcome to SRP!
As Jimmy says, it looks like all it needs is a professional honing and check out the vendor services.

Definitely read the beginner's section and start practicing stropping.

That looks to be in very good condition - the only thing I spotted was a touch of rust around the pivot but even that does not look serious enough to remove scales.

When you send it for honing you might want to get the spike muted - especially as a beginner. I don't see the point of an extreme spike - unless you need to get in some very delicate places - so you will not be losing anything but you may retain a little more blood without it.

Hi and welcome. That's a great looking razor. If you can't get a decent shave with it then something is seriously wrong. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

That is a Goldenedge, and in very good shape. I would just give it a good polishing with some MAAS or Simichrome and have it honed. They are very good shaving razors but watch out for that spike tip. They are unforgiving if you are not paying attention while shaving, spike bite.

Mass and hone is all it needs. Some pivot cleaning maybe and if the pivot is tight after cleaning your good to go. You went from one of the worst to one of the best. Your learning fast :<0) Welcome to SRP .
