12k Naniwa vs Barbers Hone
I'm looking to prepare for the day when my SR needs honing. Currently I have a Norton 4k/8k stone and was thinking about getting a 12K Naniwa. But looking at Lynn's video on honing he mentions barber hones. Can a barber hone replace a 12K stone. The price seems more reasonable, but are the two a match as finishing stone

Depends on the barber hone. You may get lucky or need to buy several. The Nani 12k is a certainty.

Go with the 12k if you are planning on doing your own honing which it sounds like you are. If you get a barbers hone which may be great, you will still buy the naniwa down the road (probably a city block down)

Another vote for the 12k. A barber hone will range from 8 to 12k ish. The 12k naniwa is a 12k and 3 times bigger so also easier to use. The 12k can be used the same as the barber hone as well

The Naniwa Pro series only go up to 10K, the Naniwa specialty go up top 12K.

I've never tried the 10K so I can't really comment but the Naniwa 12K is one of the best finishers on the market. But having used both Nanaiwa SS and Chosera stones my take on both these stones are as follows, you won't get a smoother or better edge off the Chosera range over the Naniwa SS and the only benefits I see personally are the Chosera stones cut quicker need less lapping, because both stones are made by the same manufacturer I would say if the mark the Naniwa SS a 12K and the Chosera down as a 10K then logically I would say the 12K would probably be the better finisher. Because there is about a $200 difference in price, the 12k SuperStone might be a better value when compared to the 10k Pro.

I have a Naniwa SS 12k. Works just fine. Another option would be to pick up a Zulu Grey. Wonderful stone and will serve the purpose well.
