Humble Beginnings
This has been a pursuit of mine for a decade or more. I just never new enough to get started. But now, a week into shaving with a straight razor, my only regret is that I didn't make the switch sooner. A huge Thank You to the community here! Awesome group of people devoted to the best shave a man can get!

Your comments about this scuttle were a deciding vote for me. Love this thing! By the way there was some discussion about pouring boiling water into this. I didn't chime in then, but now that I have this in my hands, I'm fairly certain that pouring boiling water in this thing wouldn't be an issue. It's a giant modified coffee mug (a good thing). This thing would suffer no more from thermal shock than my morning coffee mug. Pulling this from the freezer and filling it with boiling water might be enough to crack it, but from normal room temprature to boiling water shouldn't be a problem. The handout that came with this is confirmation.

Going from room temperature to 212 plus degrees in a few seconds will probably damage your scuttle. 212 degree water temperature will render your shaving soap or cream useless within a few minutes. Water temperature above 175 degrees will dry out your soap or cream before you complete your shave. (Don't ask me how I know these things to be true). Experience is a great teacher.

I tried explaining to my wife in the deepest baritone I could muster, is that SR shaving is more of an experience than a chore. From the feel of the hot towel on your face, to the smell of your preshave. The sound of the razor on the strop. Will you use a soap or a cream. Hot scuttle or cold, or do a face lather and no scuttle at all. Then there's the the fragrance of your shaving lather and the feel of your brush as you apply it. That first pass of your razor, while you try to remember everything you've learned from previous shaves. I tried to explain this was the reason I was looking at more samples of soaps and creams. Even though there are several that I have but haven't tried yet. It's about the whole experience, I said. She just gave me the deer in the headlights look and nodded. So the S.L.A.M. addiction is well under way. VIVE LE RASOIR
