    Default 5/8 v. 6/8

What do you guys think for a begginer? I have a round point 5/8 and I would like to try something a little bigger. Right now I'm only comfortable buying from SRD, but they are 'out of stock' on many larger blades.

I'm just curious how you guys like the bigger razors...

(buying from a member here would be ok too)

    Or maybe a 7/8, or 8/8???

What about grinds? For shaving feedback and comfort?

    Full hollow. 1/2 Hollow?

Have you tried the SRP classifieds? There is also Classic Shaving, Maggard Razors, QED, Shave Nation and a host of others. SRD seams to have the best prices though.

I've been S.R. shaving for five months. I've tried various blade grinds and widths. I started my journey with full hollow 5/8's razors. I always do a three pass shave with my S.R. I have discovered 1/4 hollow grinds and wide blades work best for me. The extra weight of the blade helps shaving ATG and produces the smoothest shaving experience for me.

I'd stay with the standard 5/8 to 6/8 hollow ground razor.

Get the other size from the one you already have and you can compare the differences.

I've been using straights for about 2 years now, and have several blades in rotation currently. Most are 5/8, a few 4/8, and one 6/8. For me, I find the 5/8 the easiest to use with the 4/8 being the most difficult. The 6/8 shaves great and I like it, but I still find 5/8 the most comfortable to wield. Even though the 4/8 are the toughest for me, one of them is my top shaver in both comfort and closeness... so even if it is more difficult for me to use, it's still worth it to me.

Long story short, I think it will all depend on how well a particular razor shaves. Personally, I don't plan to go looking for any more 4/8, but I would never give up the couple I have either. JMHO, and YMMV.

I use a 5/8 at work and either a 7/8 or 17/16 (i think, i cant remember exactly) at home the big razor is fun but slightly more unwieldy than the 7/8. It is also a much heavier grind, i think it is close to twice as heavy.
whatever you choose you will get used to using, i doubt you will find a lot of difference between either size, and in response to 10 pups, it really doesn't make a lot of difference shaving under my nose whichever one I use

I find that the larger hollow blades give me more feedback when stropping which is helpful for a beginner. I would encourage a 6/8 half to full hollow for that reason.
