    Default New to SRP

    Hello,

I have finally ditched my multiblade POS and am currently using a DE Safety Razor. I am considering going to a straight razor. For ease of use, hopefully in time and just something better for myself.

I know somewhere in her is a list of products not to buy, could someone please help me with this, I have looked but cannot find it.

    Thanks in advance!!!

The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Hi & welcome to SRP. You will find that this is a good place to get you started in straight razor shaving. There is a wealth of information on here, especially in the Library so go there & start at the beginning. From there, you can work your way around & learn different things but one of the first things to learn is how to strop a razor. You can use an old wide leather belt if you have one you don't use anymore & a butterknife. You don't want to dive in with a new strop & razor or you will end up accidentally cutting a good strop which is why you want a practice one at first. If you get a used straight razor, send it out to one of the honemiesters on here to get it shave ready. Also if you buy a used one, you will want to know what to look for which you can find out on here as well. You don't want to buy one that has a lot of hone wear or a frown on the cutting edge. You will eventually want to get a second one for when you send one out to be honed so that you will have something to shave with. You will also need a brush, a mug & some shaving soap. If you want to buy yourself a new straight, look on Straight Razor Designs & a good one to start with is the Ralph Aust. If you buy the kit which will come with a strop also, Lynn, who founded this forum is a part owner of SRD & he will hone your new razor to make sure it is shave ready. You will also get a certificate for another free honing when it is time for your razor to be honed but that should be after a few months as long as you learn to strop correctly which will keep the edge fresh & sharp. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask on here as there are many experienced & knowledgable members on here that would be more than happy to help or answer any questions you might have. Check the site out & learn. Good luck & have fun!
    Steve
