Flattening stone help
I've been shopping around and reading reviews on flattening stones. The most common one being the Norton flattening stone of which has a ton of negative reviews of it being crooked out of the box and worthless on anything above 1000 (even though it is most often recommended for the 4000/8000 combo stone.) I've noticed that Naniwa makes one that looks very similar to the Norton but have never been able to find any reviews. Any recommendations? If it's possible, I'd like one lapping plate that would work well on 1k-12k......that isn't going to cost me one of my kidneys. nah mean?

Thanks. That DMT 8C stone looks nice. The reviews are great too. Might just have to give it a go.

It'll take some abuse. We use them for almost everything lapping and also to take a lot of metal off in a hurry when taking chips, etc. out of razors. It's a good workhorse.

I used a Naniwa lapping stone in the past. Used it for a long time and never lapped it. I didn't know it needed to be flattened. When I knew I never used it again. I bought a glass shelf at Ikea and 220 grit silicon carbide. I now use as much as one or even half a tea spoon silicon carbide with water and flatten all my hones on it. It works great and it's very fast. I use it for coticule, naniwa ss, c12k, nakayama, etc. Now my hones are as flat as possible.
An example how to use silicon carbide:
This guy uses silicon carbide with another powder. I don't know what it is, but this shows how you can flatten your stones with this method.Last edited by JohnDee; 12-30-2014 at 09:40 PM.
