Here's a cheaper alternative. I'd get all 3 (1000, 4000 and 8000).
1000 to quickly build the bevel and hone out any minor nicks
4000 to fully establish the bevel
8000 to polish it
These work very slowly, so the 1000 may be a necessity. I got them from their CDN distributor so I had to pay extra, but they did a good job and I'm sending them to my stepbro.

Arkansas stones aren't measured in grits but a knife sharpener in my area said that the surgical stones are equal to 1000 grits. It's about the highest you can get for KNIFE sharpening but we are in another realm altogether. We need to make an edge sharp enough to shave facial hair. I can shave my leg hair with my pocket knife but it won't work on my delicate face hairs. You will learn to do something that alot of people around you can't do anymore and you will need atleast a 4000/8000 whetstone.

Thanked: 0As long as the strop is of good quality leather and the pores aren't clogged, it should work. You might want to use a little bit of Gojo, Fast Orange, or a pumice stone to clean it up a little bit, and then apply mink oil or strop conditioner to it. When in doubt, use the search function and help files to find out what you need.
