Sorry I didn't see the post earlier. There are a bunch of reasons why you might be having problems. For some it's technique. For some, the razor gets messed up on the first stropping. I have seen many razors with rolled edges from the first stropping by a new person. Tis no big deal. People often don't recognize for some time what they are doing incorrectly and then a light bulb goes off. There is a lot of art here and a lot to learn. I worked with one guy for months and in the end, he was still holding the razor at 90 degrees on his face and scraping himself silly. I have sent some people razors and they have cut themselves up thinking the reason was the razor wasn't sharp enough not understanding that a dull razor pulls and is uncomfortable and an over honed razor usually glides over the face without removing whisker. Just technique problems. I never compare a straight razor to a disposable. I can't shave with a disposable without nicking a couple of scars on my chin no matter how light I go. Just a different animal. A straight razor is usually much more forgiving and every bit as nice a shave.

The easiest thing to do is to send me back the razor for a look and I'll pick up the postage.

hey guys--first and foremost i wanna thank all ye who gave me their best wishes---not to worry i AM back in one piece but got into a training accident and now i am in the process of getting an early ETS due to medical discharge

good news out the way----- now bad

most of my shaving kit was stolen in luggage on a civilian flight--got a cliam in the works but without "travelers" insurance things might not go my way

oh BTW---never pack your norton in a duffle bag--dont know what the f*&k i was thinking---when i got it (the only thing that was left of my shaving kit) it was cracked and very badly chipped so now i can not even use to to try and hone the dovo i got in austria (mentioned in first post)

the more i thought about it i should have just mailed my shaving kit to my home of record--i read somewhere here that some people do that to avoid the TSA jumping on them

MORAL---get travel insurance if you only have 1 good razor

thank Mr. Abrams for your advice and the offer of inspecting my razor--well now you dont have to lol i got some money coming my way and i have already spoken with Mr. Ayers and once i get seperation check i am gonna be back to a becoming a happy shaver

BTW Mr. Abrams and Mr. Ayars, that dovo i got from you guys ended shaving like a dream i really enjoyed it--makes me look forward to getting another pre honed razor from you guys

ok just got my leather strop(russian XL), cream, norton and flattening stone from Mr Ayers so now i can work on getting my dovo olivewood to shaving standards.

still haevent resolved the issue with the airlines-airport but when i do i will use that money and buy me a Mr. Abrams pre-honed razor cuz i am pretty sure i will not be able to hone my current razor to the one i had before

question---the russian dovo XL strop...mine came with a bit of a bend-- is there particular method to getting it a bit more straight so i dont get those dips when i strop

ok so i guess no advice on the russian XL

well not using it anyways had some probs with it so not gonna use it until further advising....

honing this dovo straight is not going good---can not get a good shave and having to use a disposable straight to finsih the rest of the job---i say the disposable gets msot (80%) of the job

so far been only doin the pyramid i saw on Mr. Abrams' DVD

do i need to do more of the pyramids????

i will try and do 5 or 10 pyramids then i am giving up and either getting help to hone it or just going back to disposable straights

I would not expect it in a new strop. You can soak the strop in water and then lay flat to dry - this might (should) take care of it. BUT: you won't be able to return it if it doesn't work. SO - I do not advise you to attempt it. Just talk to Jim, I am sure he'll take good care of you.

Honing - can't really know... It takes some time to get the hang of it, and then some razors are just harder to hone. Lap the stone, check the edge with the magic marker. Maybe you are not even hitting the edge?

do not want to over hone or just "break" tha freakin thing but i am about to throw it out the window

more bad luck going on now and i would really like a good razor

still using the disposable straights for now

wonder how long it is gonna take with my norton 4/8/k to get this dovo shave ready
