Thanked: 4Sorry for my novice question...when you talk about the 5/8 DOVO best quality do you mean the 100 (half hollow shoulderless) or the 101 (full hollow with stabilyzer)?
I'm close to buy my first SR for real use and better to know what to buy.
I've soft whiskers and delicate skin (unfortunately)

Thanked: 1Hello again;
Am I right to think that the gold leafing of the spine and the blade will fade with the stripping?
Thanks

Thanked: 1Hello everybody;
So I got my new razor. I followed the advises of the veterans and I bought a Dovo Best Quality 6/8 in black. My choice was also made easy by the fact that they did not have the Bismarck in stock.
The vendor told me that it is shave ready from the factory. I have stropped it already (20 passes in the linen part and 40 on the leather one) and will have my first shave tomorrow....
Since the strop is a thin one I am using an X pattern...what pressure should I apply...weight of the blade of a bit more?
Thanks

Weight of the blade only but if it has the factory edge it won't be shave ready and will likley be a bad shave. Send it to a pro for honing and start right with a shave ready razor.

Thanked: 1I could not wait so I had a go at a shave and indeed the razor did not feel as sharp as my shavette by a long shot so I ll have to have it sharpened.
Can I expect a properly honed SR to be as sharp as a Shavette?

I'm quoting myself here from an earlier post I made in this thread (underlining added), which I ordinarily wouldn't do (I'm not an egomaniac), but you are going to find that as I and others said, factory shave ready isn't shave ready. My guess is your next post will be about an uncomfortable shave.
Now please take my advice and send it to Lynn or somebody reputable from the classifieds to have it honed to shave ready. It will cost $25 dollars or so plus postage and a couple of weeks "in your hand", but otherwise you will be taking a risk of having it ruined by someone (a knife store or honer) who "thinks" they know what they're doing. Then after you use it for a few months you'll be sending it again for another $25 + postage after you degrade the edge. That all could have been done for free included in the price from SRD, but...Just call me Harold

Thanked: 1The reputation of Lynn precedes him but I am writing from Europe so it is not that practical to send my SR to the USA for honing. Having said that my next SR will be purchased from SRD since even with postage I find his prices competitive.

sorry, i didn't know you were in Europe. the rest of the advice stands...find someone near you who really knows how to hone...not just says they do.

It's also a good idea to add your location to your profile so we can give better advice and you never know there may be someone close who can help
