Keep the spine on the strop and don't apply pressure toward the edge, use the weight of the razor only and let speed come with time. Then you should be fine stropping. Lots of YouTube examples too.
We have a local place that sells razors and does honing in Denver. But they don't shave with straights, so I don't trust them. I'm new here too, but been around enough to know sharp, razor sharp and shave ready are all very different things. If you don't confirm with a shave test, it isnt shave ready.Last edited by stove; 02-05-2015 at 07:17 AM.

Thanked: 3224Did the store tell you that your razor was honed at the factory or did they hone it before giving it to you? The reasons I am asking are that they do not list a honing service on their web site and if they do no honing then you are starting with a factory edge. Factory edges have a rep for being sometimes hit and miss as far as completely shave ready goes. Add to that poor stopping technique, which most everyone goes through at the start, and you might have an edge that needs honing from someone that knows how to do it.

Hi Armourer
Here is a link to find members and mentors near or in Alberta. Will probably help you get the stropping down and help with any needed honing.

Thanked: 3215Just look at the edge straight down with magnification and a strong light. Any reflections are chipping or where the bevels are not meeting.
A “rolled” edge could be the edge is just rolled over, broken off or just chipped. Lifting the spine, hitting the edge at the flip or just too much pressure on the edge are common causes.
Here is an edge with micro chips and a section that is not meeting or rolled in the middle, the small shiny spots.

I just had a look at the website for where you brought the razor and if you got a Dovo then likely it is factory shave ready and will need honing. Has it alwaus tugged or wad it fine to start. If always then you can almost guarantee that they sold it shave ready from factory and it wasn't actually shave ready.

Thanked: 1Thanks everyone. I am 98% sure it was my stropping that is to blame. I think I have everything in hand now, just found someone near me that can sort me out.
