I agree with other posts, that there are a few gems in the Classifieds right now (one from "right across the lake" from Obie in Milwaukee), and that SRD Dovos or (better yet) Ralf Austs are available with a free re-honing when you need it.

Love the shave I am getting with it. I have been using that for over a year now. I think I am ready to give the straight razor a go now. I am seeking input on which brand to get, etc.. New vs. Used? Any advice is welcomed and appreciated.

I would not by anything " sight unseen", it just does not make sense.

It makes sense for the seller I guess. If he has buyers he must be doing something right.

I probably wouldn't buy one myself. Don't get me wrong, I am not recommending, just pointing out whippeddog has many happy customers but this is not the place to discuss, there is a thread below discussing so I'll leave it at that.

Good luck with whichever razor, new or vintage, you decide to start with.

As a relative newbie myself who started with a new Ralf Aust from SRD, then bought a sight unseen Whipped Dog (which turned out to be a nice ERN Crown & Sword) for a travel razor, I can tell you that a shave-ready razor honed by someone reputable (like Lynn at SRD or Larry at Whipped Dog) is a must. You don't want to start out trying to shave with a poorly honed piece of steel.

If you can spend around $100 on a razor, an Aust 5/8 round point is a great shaver. If you're on a tight budget, drop Larry a line -- I'm sure he'd work with you to find a good a razor for your needs -- even if it is unseen.

    BTW, welcome to SRP!
