Question Noob Question: Aftershaves vs. Post-Shave Balms.

So, is there a difference between these two things? On pretty much every site I visit that sells shaving things, there's always separate sections for aftershaves and post-shave balms/rubs/etc. There has to be a difference, right? Otherwise, why make separate categories for them?

If there is a difference, what do you prefer? I have yet to actually order any.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm not sure if it's correct, but I think of aftershaves as an alcohol based 'splash' whereas Balms are more like a moisturizer 'creamy'. I don't use a splash, but my face would be much worse for wear if I didn't have an aftershave balm!

That sounds right to me. I need a balm not a splash. I have the same NOOB issues now looking for a good balm.

I am using Nivea original post shave balm and Pinaud Clubman Aftershave Lotion (never after the same shave or in the same day). The Nivea is what I consider to be a balm while the Pinaud is what I call a splash and is alcohol based. I like the smell of both but the Nivea/Balm is the direct my skin wants me to go.

Would agree with ecormier. Aftershave would be a alcohol based liquid with balm being more cream like or thick viscous liquid

I use both on the same day.

My approach is the balm and then the AS but you can do a reverse order. YMMV

Anyone use a moisteriser after AS or balm? I find all of my AS and balms dry my skin, some more than others. I haven't seen moisterisers discussed here.

I think most balms are moisturizers, but yes I do use a lotion, its a habit I picked up when working in the desert and now its just a daily routine ,, plus I like to use the Nivea balm too, seems to calm down a razor burn if I get too aggressive or a blade that isn't quite there tc

Been thinking, I may be confusing the dry feeling for tightness, will check properly to see any dryness. I use nivea sesitive balm as i buy in bulk when it's half price, I was previously using nivea soft moisteriser after but will try without today.

I just started to use organic unrefined Shea butter as an after shave balm, great on any dry skin also. No chemicals and the best skin care I have found yet.
