    Default My progress

    Hello Everybody;

    I wanted to share my progress with you.

    Not even 10 shaves with a SR and I think I have succeeded in getting a shave as close as the one I got with my Shavette. It takes me 40 min but is the price to pay not the get butchered.....

    For me a key point to follow has been to follow the growth of my bear for the against the grain pass. That seems to do the trick.

    Thank you for all your advises.

    Just a couple days behind you, but I am still working on it. Going to try some XTG today.

    Congratulations.

    Congratulations on your success. You are right, knowing how your beard grows is a big help in knowing how to do ATG.

    I would suggest getting to know your razor and beard VERY WELL before going ATG.
    Like, after your shaves become routine and you get you razor grip postion down for every area of your face. Going upwards with the edge requires a very good razor/grip/blade postion on your face and in your hand. Much more patience and focus than the downward and diagonal shave.

    Great news! Congratulations!!

    Now, I feel like a broken record but, I have been shaving daily for 50 years and have never gone (or needed to go) directly against the grain to get a good shave. I do a variety of with and across the grain strokes and get as good a shave as I need (16 hours before any visible shadow), and I have a coarse and heavy beard. Do what's right for you, but don't chase some mythical level of shaving nirvana IF you don't need to to get a good shave.

    ATG is a great pass, but to look at it as strictly a South to North pass can be misleading.

    Some refer to a scything pass, which is more of a NW to SE pass, more of an angled stroke. But again, this all depends on understanding how your beard grows, your beard map as they call it. You may have a beard growth that simply doesn't need an ATG pass, or have growth like mine which is almost diagonal with the whiskers growing in a 45 degree angle downwards in a SW direction, so for me, a scything pass is extremely effective.

    As JimmyHAD points out in the recent Beginner's Tips, this is a good example of YMMV....or in this case, "different strokes for different folks..."
