    Default razor suggestions

    Hello,
New to the forum and straight razors. I got a utopia replaceable blade style razor a couple weeks ago and so far love the feel and idea of using a straight. I went in knowing the utopia was merely to see if I had an interest and if it would help my neck irritation, but am now ready to look at a real razor. I'm working on a limited budget but would like to also get a reasonably good quality piece. I was hoping the wisdom if the forum could steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the information I gained before joining!

I assume you are talking about a shavette stye razor rather than a safety razor. This is a pretty good preparation for a straight razor. If you are looking for a bargain, your best bet is in the classifieds of this forum. Just make sure that the seller specifically declares the razor to be shave ready. Also, you might want to check some of the post history of the seller to confirm some sort of warm fuzzy feeling of security regarding that particular seller.

Welcome aboard and be sure to ask any questions that come up!

Correct, what I currently have is a shavette style razor. I was previously using an Edwin Jagger safety razor. Thanks for the welcome. Sounds like I have a lot to learn!

Go to the Classifieds section of this website and pickup a vintage razor. It will be shave ready and the cost will be minimal. You get a quality piece if steel that has been tested over time.

I would think the next logical step would be to put a small amount into soaps and a brush and then pick up a nice used blade, shave ready from the classifieds. They often sell there for wicked great deals.

Thanks for the quick replies! I have a passable badger brush, and some Taylor of old bond street sandalwood shave cream, which smells great! I'll definitely have to check the classifieds and see what I can find. I'm anxious to use a real blade!

Take your time. The thing with straight razor shaving is you need to relax and then you find it is very relaxing.

You already have great advice for a razor just make sure you don't forget the strop. A razor is useless without a strop
