I think it would be good if you bought an inexpensive razor that is shave ready for learning with and save your heirlooms for when you have it all figured out. As beginners we tend to be hard on gear, fumbles and faucet dings and unnecessary wear. That will give you two things, protection of your heirlooms and the shave ready edge. When the time comes to hone blades it will also give you a razor to work with.
