Thanked: 4First shave with new RA 7/8 razor
I been wet shaving for a year now and i finally got myself a new razor. I wanted to try it out for a while and see how I liked it before I invested in a new razor. Previously I had two whipped dog razors, a 5/8 and a 6/8. What a difference a new razor makes!! It was like the difference between night and day! My RA was so sharp and balanced compared to my other two razors. If I had to do it over again I think i would still start out with a whipped dog razor but I think I wouldn't wait so long for a new razor. Once I had the basics down and could get a nice close shave i would of bought been me a new razor if I would of known the difference it would make. I only say this because I started with a 5/8 and I had a lot of trouble with it. I switched to a 6/8 razor and never looked back. Buying a hundred dollar razor and then deciding it's not for you and then having to buy another razor size for me would of been very costly and I wouldn't of done it. Im very thankful for this forum and for all your input and advise. I don't post a lot I'm more of a lurker but it's nice to know if I need questions answered. Next step, honing!

Thanked: 3795I congratulate you on your discovery, but would like to point out one flaw in your logic just in case any other beginner reads this...
There is only one flaw in your logic. Yes, you could have risked buying a "hundred dollar razor" but that does not mean that you were risking a hundred dollars. Unless you dropped and destroyed the razor, if you found that straight shaving was not for you then you could have sold it for at least $ 60 or $70.
I'm not criticizing. I'm glad that you gave the Aust razor a try. I think that they are extremely well made and an excellent bargain, so I compliment you on your purchase!

Glad you decided to break it in! Now you have a benchmark blade.

A pretty sensible route into SR shaving. Congrats on your good sense. Most of us here probably weren't as clever. And congrats on your 7/8 RA. I'll bet most of us here would love to own that. Take some photos for us. We all love razor porn!

You know it is like anything I guess.......I started out with a Dovo just under $200 razor thinking if I dislike or not have an affinity for this I could sell it and recoup some monies. That said, I had yet to find this site, look at alot of the recommendations or I would have started out with a RA as my first. I now have 2 RA's which really and honestly, my 5/8 with black plastic scales (the cheapest one of the RA's) is really my most consistent razor due to the ease of keeping an edge on this particular razor. Best $103 I have spent.
Congrats and enjoy!German blade snob!
