    Default ??? about honing

I received my norton 4K/8K and my bout from Howard. I pulled an old razor and attempted to tune it up. After an hour of work still no edge. I took a black marker and run down the edge took on pass on the 4k side and found i was not even getting near the edge. went to the hardware store and gor 3M 1000 wet paper. tried to set the bevel. Checeked with the marker again and the toe and center of the blade are clean but the last 1/2" of the heel is still not making contact with the hone. also have a wide spot on one side. This razor was used in a barber shop by my granddad so it has some wear but not excessive. Do I need to go to woodcraft and get a 1000k? Do I need to send it to Lynn? I hate to touch my one good dovo untill I get another ready to go.

Um, I'd rather scrap the Dovo, unless it's a really good and expensive one, and keep the one used by Grandpa because of the connection.

Best: buy a $10 ebay blade to practice.

1K wet/dry works, but if you plan working many dogs better get that 1K stone.

    Good luck

Set the bevel on a 1k (stone or paper) and then set the edge. You're on the right path.

Maybe the blade has a bit of a smile and a narrow hone would help?

Don't bother with the 1K hone. Stick with the 1k wet/dry sandpaper. It is faster than the 1K hone and has other uses. Plus it is inexpensive.

I would not be practicing on my Grandpa's razor. Frankly that is how I started and succeeded in ruining it. I also would not be learning on a new Dovo. Get a cheap practice razor.

    Just my two cents,

I have several of grandpaws razors. He was a barber so I don't know which he personaly used. There are a couple that are poor at best. I will start with on of them. I already bought the 1K/220 combo at woodcraft. I didn't trust the paper.
I won't bother the taylor or boker (both in good condition) untill I practice on the champion with the big chip in the blade.
