I started with a shavette and switched to the straight.
For the straight you use a lower angle and no pressure, just the weight of the blade.

If the straight is sharp you should be getting a shave just as good, if not better, than the shavette.

I would bet that it needs to be honed. Dovo's are sold as "shave ready" from the factory, but the factory edge is way to dull for a comfortable shave.
