Thanked: 150storing a japanese straight
I have noticed that the japanese straight razors do not fold into any scales. I was wondering how people stored these razors so that the blade is not damaged. In a drawer? on a shelf? in a pouch?

As I have seen, somehow like that:

Well, it seems like you'd have to be careful with those - more so than normal folding straights. If the box gets tossed around or slid back and forth in a drawer the blade looks as if it would be grinding along the inside of the box... not good...

If you buy them new they come, these days usually in a wood box and wrapped in paper. So you can keep them in the paper if you want but quite frankly these ain't no hollow ground razors. They are like a super thick wedge and I doubt movement in a wood box is going to really upset them unless they are really abused. I keep my Tosuke in a drawer with all my other razors and have never had any problems.

They do seem a little thicker, and I'm sure the paper would help loads. I'm not so sure about just leaving it open in a box though... just doesn't seem like it'd be friendly.

I'd like to get one of these razors. Anyone making them at the moment?

The Tosuke's are not being made anymore however they are still being sold. Contact Bruno and he can fix you up. There are also iwasaki's being produced. He is a very famous sword maker and teacher in japan and his razors show up every now and then. You just have to be lucky and catch them at the right time and have the means to buy and ship out of Japan. The Tosuke's retail in japan for about 11,000 yen and the iwasaki's sell from about 22,000 on up depending on the model. That of course does not include local tax and shipping and other premiums you would probably have to pay.
