Thanked: 0Are these microserrations?
Hi All
Well I got my Radioshack microscope today, and had loads of fun at work magnifying everything. When I got home I used it for what I really wanted it for. A brand new Weyersberg 7/8 barber notch that was shaving rough, even though the (trusted) source had honed it. Sure enough, under the micsorscope it was a mess.
The edge had chunks missing out if it, I guess that these are what are referred to as "micro serrations"? Invisible to the naked human eye, but at x60 mag, they were very clear chunks of metal missing. They looked like little bite marks - sounds silly I know...
I rather bravely took it to the 1000grit (it was a very expensive knife) and re set the bevel, and took to the TOS. There were still a couple of chunks so I rinsed and repeated. Finished up on the coticule and under the microscpoe things look a lot smoother now.
Couple of passes on the pasted strop, and a shave test tomorrow morning - will report.
Thanks for comments about microserrations...
Si

I think what you saw were micro chips in the edge. At the magnification you were using and the resolution that scope is capable of I doubt if you could see microserrations in the edge.

Thanked: 0Hi,
as already written, I doubt that you can see the microserrations at this level of magnification. If you look at Tim Zowadas thread about different hones (http://straightrazorpalace.com/showthread.php?t=12099), you will have a hard time seeing serrations as 200x....
Did you check the result of the stropping with paste on the "chunks" ?

Thanked: 0Ha yes- I meant Micro-chips didn't I. Anyway, I got them out so thats all that counts i guess.
I shaved with it this morning;
The shave was good - a little tugging on the Chin area, but then I always get that with every razor so far. It was pretty good all round. Not as good as the Timor that I did a week ago, but then I shaved with that a second time and it was not as good as the first time (but then it never is as good as the first time is it?).
I have just received my first honemeister shaver - courtesy of this very forum - so I will see how that compares tomorrow.
Thanks for listening.
