Thanked: 28Bench strops and Paddle strops
Hello again it the straight razor virgin with another question. I have more questions than a 5 year old so bear with me.
I see they have bench and paddle strops are these the way to go for a beginner. They seem like they would be easier to use and much harder to cut in half. Also is the type of leather real important?

They can help a beginner by eliminating the variable of strop slack. They are just as easy to nick as any other strop so replaceable parts are good for a beginner. As long as decent quality smooth flat leather it will be fine.

The bench strop is probably the easiest to use, but it also takes up the most counter space.
A paddle strop is nice because it is easy to use, usually smaller and lighter than a bench strop, and you can easily toss it into a drawer.
I've nicked, slashed, and destroyed just about every type of strop out there over the years.
