If Lynn says it's good, it's good. I think you're more likely to cut yourself with a razor that's not sharp enough, so you compensate with pressure.
Do your cheeks, and start with the spine almost against your face, then gradually move it away to find the right angle...no pressure and go slow. Try shaving the lather and not the skin and you'll find the whiskers dropping. It takes a while to get it all right.
In the meantime, strop carefully, watch some videos and finish with whatever you used to use until you're comfortable.
