Default I have to ask...Can a razor be too sharp?

I know many are going to think I am crazy for asking this question, but bear with I am in territory still.

Any how I sent my razor out to SRD to be honed and sharpened and they did what appears to be a great job. The razor seems to be so sharp that it is scary I am almost afraid to try it out on my face.

Am I being stupid for being this cautious? Can a razor be to sharp to start with? or should I just relax and jump in and shave with it?

    Not really. I don't think
possibly to sharp for the operators skill level but not the blade
I think there was a similar discussion about this some time ago

No, but it doesn't need to be as sharp as you might think to get a first rate shave.

It has been discussed before. Essentially you can take an edge too far to be a comfortable shave. You can also take an edge too far and it breaks off. You can also make an edge that is weak and does not last very long. As long as you don't go past the optimum point it's all good. That is where the consistent edges of the very experienced stop. I think as we progress in our honing abilities we often go past the optimum and then learn where that is and move on from there.

A razor can never be too sharp. However the edge can be damaged and ruined and often times when people say "too sharp" that's the issue.

People sometimes refer to an edge being over honed but in reality you have to really try and over hone an edge. it's not that easy to do.

Since your razor was honed by SRD, I don't think you have anything to worry about. You'll cut yourself more with a sharp razor that has dulled.

I am I have to take some xanac first.....only kidding. Ever since I started using the SR for the morning shavewith the grain shave and the dc for the against and across I don't get much growth in a 24 period. I will wait till the week end when I have more beard and time to take my time. I am sure it will be fine. Lyn Abrams did the sharpening for me. He even called me at home to tell me it would take a couple of extra days to get that razor at shaving quality to his liking. A fine business man and good guy he seems like and he knows his honing from the looks of the blade.

If Lynn says it's good, it's good. I think you're more likely to cut yourself with a razor that's not sharp enough, so you compensate with pressure.

Do your cheeks, and start with the spine almost against your face, then gradually move it away to find the right angle...no pressure and go slow. Try shaving the lather and not the skin and you'll find the whiskers dropping. It takes a while to get it all right.

In the meantime, strop carefully, watch some videos and finish with whatever you used to use until you're comfortable.
