Thanked: 3226Yes, I like the act of shaving with a SR best but there are some DEs and SEs out there that will give a SR a run for it's money too.

I started with the mr1 as well it all is my favorite razor it hasn't left my counter since I got it. I use feather blades with it and so far that has been the best combination for me. A lot of people like the parker 24c, merkur 34c, muhle r89 either of those seem like great razors. Then of courseyou can get into the pricey ones like above the tie and feather razors. There is a plethora of them to choose from right now.

Now I can only say WTF!!! Why has no one told me about DE's before! I blame all men for not spreading the word.
we have a DE section , so we have told you about them! You just weren't listening. If you get a more aggressive razor and sample some different blades you can get a shave that will rival most straights with some practice. My Fatboy on 9 served me well for 40 plus years , and with a feather in it it really compares. Haven't used it in a while but it just came back from repeating g so I guess it's time. Good luck. Thanked: 270I felt the same way. I was 54-years-old and my face was getting killed by the typical department store fare for decades.
My entry into DE razors wasn't as clean as yours. I got a Parker 91-R and didn't realize at first that it was defective. Finally I got a Merkur 34C and couldn't believe that a shave could be so close and comfortable. Now I use straight razors, but it took quite some time before I could master them.

Thanked: 3226If you really want a rip roaring DE shave for not much money try a Fatip Grande open comb, I like the nickel finish, with a Feather blade. I would not say that it is for beginners but boy will it shave you close and clean.

No one told me about this forum either! It was only after I decided I wanted a straight razor that I found it, and the DE section. In fact I can honestly say it was this forum that lead me to buying my MR1. Someone should have told me back when I was 16 about them, And this forum didnt exist back then, heck the internet didnt exist back then!
I will probably get another DE at some point. I actually ordered an MR6 from the mash up pile at Maggards for a travelling/gym razor (I dont want to lose the one I got and as I know it will work well and was really cheap as it has cosmetic damage) I will be looking for a more agressive one next but that wont be for a while.

Thanked: 3226Yes, I think most beginners are surprised at how long a learning curve there is with a straight razor. I shaved for 40 years before trying to learn to shave with a straight razor and was also surprised. Just take your time and don't push things, it will come in it's own good time. It is a lot less painful if you do it that way, trust me.
