I got "razor oil" from Classic Shaving. I'm sure several places have it and it was five bucks. I don't actually know what's in it, but trust it's safe for razors, being razor oil and all.

I know this is an oldish thread, but for what it's worth thought I'd reply...

I used to rave about Eucalyptus oil for my blades, to both protect and also to 'sterilise' (it's a natural antiseptic). However, i haven't used anything on my razors now for a bout a year. All I do is dry the blade on a towel and store it in its case. I've haven't noticed any degregation at all; no spots, rust or anything.

Certainly I think using a protective oil is fine but in my recent experience it's actually not required...
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Mine too, does a good job oiling and also seems to clean the blade a little

I started using it when I ordered my first 'real' razor from Rasurpur, a fine Grelot, he threw in a small spray bottle of Ballistol oil and IIRC a pack of gummybears!
    Hells yeahz gummy bears!

I have a 500 ml can, I make sure I use toilet paper for the oiling of my blades so I can flush it down afterwards, it's strong smelling stuff

I wipe my blades over the paper with oil, then take another paper to wipe most of the oil off. Maybe this is counter-intuitive though, kinda became a habit doing it this way.

As to reply to the above post, I used to not oil my daily shaver for a year or so and there was no sign of degradation either, not that I would have expected there to be.
Definitely not necessary, but it puts my mind at ease, which is priceless.

Another vote for Ballistol here. It protects and lubricates. It doesn't get "gummy" over time. I moisten a cotton ball with it and then give my blades a light coat. I keep the moistened cotton ball in a small jar for further use.

10W-30, just like I put in my old CJ-7.

Only half kidding, I do seriously use that or vegetable oil when honing on the Arkansas stones. Only because I'm a mechanic, and it doesn't cost money to save the half-quart bottle left over after an oil change.

If I were planning to use it as a general protectant for a razor that isn't in my everyday use rotation, then Ballistol would be my go-to. Good enough for the steel in my Weatherby hunting rifles, more than good enough for the steel on my straight razors.
