Thanked: 0Alright you all convinced me to return that and look for another. After a decent amount of digging I see a few decently priced ones in the SRP classifieds but am unable to find other places that look legit. Any recommendations for the razors in the classifieds atm or another place that sells legitimately. I've looked through a lot of the guides here and they seem to suggest a dovo 5/8 that I cannot find for under $100.
Thanks all for your replies so far it's been helpful!
Sidenote I would like to spend under $75 since I'm still a beginner.

I don't think the forum rules allow us to discuss particular ads from the SRP classifieds on the open forum so I will give you some pointers on what characteristics people often recommend for a starter razor- 5/8 or 6/8, full hollow ground, round point. The round point is probably not that critical, just stay away from spike points. I think there are several that fit this category currently in the classifieds under $75. For a brand new razor my suggestion would be to purchase from Straight Razor Place, although I think their lowest priced razor is a little over your budget.

Thanked: 113Welcome aboard! Like previous members mentioned check out the classifieds- you will find a true shave ready razor here.
Don't be afraid to reach out to Don or Lynn from SRD, you can't beat the SR/strop combo.
Enjoy the journey! BTW with the right equipment the journey is way more enjoyable.
Cheers.

I agree. If you go to the AoS store they will undoubtedly try to "up-sell" you to one of theirs, many of which are OK name brand razors. BUT, they are not shave ready, no matter what they say, and they will be marked up compared to what you can buy from a reputable on-line shop (like SRD) or several others. The SRP classifieds are also a great area to search. There are many vintage bargains there, constantly being sold and replaced with others.
Just for reference, a quality, brand name entry level SR that is shave ready will cost around $125, give or take, compared to your $60 letter opener. Live and learn!

Thanked: 4828At current the time there is only one razor in the classifieds that meet your budget and it is a suitable beginner razor. There are not that many razors currently in the classifieds if that one does not float your boat keep checking. They change often.

Good choice and one shave with the Aust and you will understand why the tactical one was not recommended.

Thanked: 351The SRD R. Aust and Strop was not just a good/great choice, it was an excellent choice!
If you take care of that razor and strop, they will both last several generations (provided your future generations take care of it, of course!).
So now you have what you NEED... but perhaps, like so many of us... you might chose to have more....
You may chose to have that razor honed on a regular basis by someone who knows razors... SRD can of course handle that job, as can many of the vendors who have posts in our Classifieds. Or perhaps you might get bitten by the bug and start amassing hones, strops, pastes and the list goes on.
Note that I have yet to mention soaps, creams, shaving brushes and aftershaves.
Enjoy the ride, there is no right or wrong way to go about this... you have made an excellent correction to your current path, you have a quality razor and strop.... add a good soap/cream and an inexpensive but good brush and you have all you *need*. It's resisting the *wants* that most of us struggle with!

Thanked: 7Hi and welcome,
Like you I'm a very new shaver so I don't feel qualified to give any advice, other than to say that the the help you get on this forum will make your journey a pleasurable one, and to read as much as you can on the forums and in the library and take it slow.
Good luck to you, fellow newbie, and I hope you are enjoying the journey as much as I am.Last edited by DMA; 10-19-2015 at 01:07 PM. Reason: Correct spelling mistake
